Human P4
Also known as Progesterone
Progesterone (P4) is a steroid sex hormone that regulates many aspects of the female phenotype and reproductive system and carries out maintenance duties in both sexes. In conjunction with estrogen, it is critical in embryonic development and the development of secondary sex characteristics in females. P4 plays a major role in pregnancy, preparing the uterus for implantation, modulating maternal immune response to the zygote, reducing uterine contractions, and regulating milk production. In both sexes, it affects the elasticity of the skin during aging, is anti-inflammatory, and maintains pancreatic function and insulin regulation. P4 is critical for the formation of healthy neural cells in both sexes and is protective to neurons during brain trauma in adults. Clinically, P4 is often used in menopausal hormone replacement therapies. Since P4 is a major factor in breast tissue formation, it likely plays a role in breast cancer pathology, though its effects on breast tumors are not fully understood.
