NHP sTfR
Also known as Soluble transferrin receptor
In plasma, iron is transported in complex with transferrin and cellular uptake of iron is mediated by the transferrin receptor (TfR). A proteolytic product of the transferrin receptor circulates in plasma as soluble transferrin receptor (sTfR). The amount of transferrin receptor expressed on a cell is proportional to the cell’s need for iron and the concentration of circulating sTfR is proportional to cellular TfR. Concentration of sTfR have been shown to be elevated during iron deficiency, when cells are more competitive for fulfilling their iron requirements.
