Human IL-23
Also known as Interleukin 23
Interleukin 23 (IL-23) is an inflammatory cytokine belonging to the IL-12 family of cytokines. Like other IL-12 family members, it is a heterodimeric protein. IL-23 consists of a subunit of IL-12p40, which it shares with IL-12, and IL-23p19, which is unique to IL-23. It has biological activities similar to IL-12 in that both induce proliferation and IFNγ production by T cells. However, while, IL-12 acts on both naïve and memory T cells, IL-23 is restricted to memory T cells. IL-23 is also a key cytokine for T helper type 17 (Th17) cell maintenance and expansion. IL-23 has a stabilizing effect on the key Th17 transcription factor, RORγt.
