Also known as Interleukin 16, Lymphocyte, Chemoattractant Factor (LCF)
Interleukin 16 (IL-16), also known as lymphocyte chemoattractant factor (LCF), is a cytokine with pleiotropic effects in the immune system. It is a unique interleukin, with no known homologs. IL-16 is a potent chemoattractant and activator for numerous immune cells that express the surface protein CD4, including lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, and dendritic cells. IL-16 is produced by many cell types, particularly lymphocytes and epithelial cells as part of an inflammatory response. It is known to modulate the activity of activated T cells and inhibit the replication of HIV. As such, it is the target for potential HIV therapeutics to halt disease progression and boost immune function. Dysregulation of IL-16 is implicated in many inflammatory and autoimmune diseases, as well as endometriosis, psoriasis, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, and many cancers.
