Human IL-27
Also known as IL-27, Interleukin 27
Interleukin 27 (IL-27) is a member of the IL-12 cytokine family with both pro- and anti-inflammatory properties. It is expressed by antigen presenting cells and only interacts with the specific cell-surface receptor IL-27R. Its pro-inflammatory activity is driving the differentiation of T cells into active populations. However, it also mediates inflammation by suppressing Th17 and regulating the behavior of other T cells. It induces differentiation of the diverse populations of T cells in the immune system and upregulates anti-inflammatory IL-10. IL-27 appears to reduce the symptoms of many inflammatory and autoimmune diseases, particularly those driven by excess Th17, and is a target for therapeutic research. Low levels of IL-27 are associated with more severe cases of multiple sclerosis.
