Granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (GCSF), also known as colony-stimulating factor 3 (CSF 3), is a glycoprotein that is produced by multiple immune cell types and functions as both a cytokine and a hormone. GCSF plays multiple roles in hematopoiesis, where it stimulates bone marrow to produce granulocytes and release them into the bloodstream. It is capable of speeding up the hematopoietic process. It is involved in the proliferation, activation, and differentiation of the most abundant type of white blood cells, neutrophils. GCSF is important in defense against infection, modulating inflammation and repair, and in the maintenance of steady state hematopoiesis. It is commonly used as a therapeutic agent for patients undergoing treatments that reduce white blood cell counts, such as chemotherapy. GCSF is also active in the nervous system, where it increases neuroplasticity by supporting the growth of new neurons.
