Cutaneous T-cell-attracting chemokine (CTACK), also known as Chemokine (C-C motif) ligand 27 (CCL27), IL-11 R-alpha-locus chemokine (ILC), and Skinkine, is a small cytokine belonging to the CC family of chemokines that plays a key role in skin health. CTACK is predominantly expressed by keratinocytes in the skin, but is also expressed in other tissues, including the gonads, thymus, and placenta. In the skin, it is expressed continuously in low levels but is heavily upregulated in response to wounds, skin irritation, and inflammatory diseases. During an inflammatory response, CTACK mediates the migration of T lymphocytes to the skin by binding to the CCR10 chemokine receptor. It also induces the migration of keratinocyte precursors from bone marrow to the skin, promoting wound healing. Elevated levels of serum CTACK indicate disease severity in atopic dermatitis, psoriasis vulgaris, and mycosis fungoides.
